Evil lies beneath the surface of all humans. In a civilized society, the evil sector of us is usually covered up by different factors. However, it releases itself when this civilization is gone. Such situation can be easily seen in this novel. The event how the conch loses it power, and the break up in the tribe, clearly states this fact.
